2013 Outlook - Arizona State

As Todd Graham takes over his next "dream job" he will have a challenge in front of him.  This roster is not bereft of talent, but it lacks shining stars. Upping the difficulty will be the fact that the team needs to also learn a new offense in 2013.

In addition to a new HC, the Sun Devils will also have a new QB under center, as last year's starter Brock Osweiler is now learning from Peyton Manning.  The new QB, rFR Michael Eubank, was recruited by Graham at Pittsburgh.  He fits the offense very well technically, but as an inexperienced QB, we will have to take a wait and see approach.  The strength of this offense will be at RB.  SR Cameron Marshall is an athletic, accomplished runner, and his backup, SO Deantre Lewis is a quality back in his own right.  Together, they comprise one of the better backfields in the country.  The receiving corp is down a few notches after losing their top three producers from a year ago.  SR Jamal Miles will need to expand his role from an all-conference kick returner, into a highly productive WR if this team is to succeed. Up front, SR OG Andrew Sampson will be responsible for leading a unit that under performed last year.  If this team is going to put up points, Sampson and his group will have to step it up.

Defensively, the team will be transitioning to a 3-3-5.  The group up front will be bolstered by the addition of JUCO transfer, Mike Pennel at DE.  He is very strong, and should be good sealing the edge.  The linebackers have former edge rusher, JR Junior Onyeali lined up outside.  If he can stay out of trouble, he should bring a rush force that this team will need.  Also at OLB, the team returns Brandon Magee.  He may be the defense's best player, but even he is not a star.  The secondary is made up of functional players, but again, no real standouts.  SR CB Deveron Carr is possibly the best of the bunch, but he too does not stand out in a crowd.

Todd Graham will have some work to do to get this team moving forward.  He will have to excel on the recruiting trail, as the rest of the Pac 12 is moving on up.  This season could be a long one for our friends in Tempe.
